Mission & Vision Our Path to Doing Justice Member Congregations

RISC stands for the Richmonders Involved to Strengthen our Communities. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit, grassroots organization with a mission to bring a greater degree of justice and fairness to the greater Richmond area.

Currently, RISC has 20 diverse member congregations that join together to work on the root causes of serious community problems. We represent over 4,000 people in the city of Richmond and the surrounding counties. RISC is a diverse organization that unites the community across socioeconomic, racial, geographic, and denominational backgrounds, including Protestant, Unitarian, and Jewish faith traditions.

House meetings with hundreds of members

We are committed to empowering congregations and individuals to identify and develop solutions to serious community problems.

RISC addresses and achieves solutions to community problems by listening, establishing networks both within and between congregations, conducting research, and direct action meetings. RISC empowers hundreds of congregational leaders through training and civic engagement in order to make changes in public policy.

Since 2002, RISC has won significant victories in the areas of housing, education and health care through a series of direct action community gatherings. Every spring, thousands of people from our 20 diverse member congregations join together to secure commitments from local community leaders and decision-makers to solve the root causes to community problems. In this way, we transcend racial, socio-economic, and religious barriers to bring about a greater degree justice and equality and make our community a better place to live work and hire.

RISC is not a direct service organization, we do not provide individuals with direct charitable services such as food or shelter. Rather, RISC examines the root causes of the problems that people are confronted with, and then we address the systemic reasons that perpetuate the need for charity.
