OUR CHILDREN WILL READ, SO THEY CAN SUCCEED!

READING MASTERY EXPANDS TO 8 RICHMOND SCHOOLS

Since our 2018 Nehemiah Action Assembly where 840 justice-seekers declared, "We want our children to read, so they can succeed!" our wish is coming true!

Throughout the summer, the RISC Education Team worked with RPS leaders to press for a pilot of the proven program Reading Mastery as a core curriculum in Fall 2018. With a new Superintendent and Cabinet coming on board, it was a stretch to get the program in place in 2018.

Because we stayed persistent, this year 8 RPS schools are implementing Reading Mastery! The schools are:

Blackwell Elementary

Greene Elementary

George Mason Elementary

Oak Grove/Bellemeade Elementary

Redd Elementary

Woodville Elementary

Henderson Middle

Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle

All kindergarten through 2nd graders are using the program in 6 elementary schools, and select groups of middle-schoolers are receiving intensive support. Every morning, throughout our city, classrooms full of kids are learning to read with proven tools!

Last year, only 48% of all children in RPS were reading on or above grade level. We are hopeful because we know that other Virginia districts have used Reading Mastery and seen their reading rates double!

RISC Education Team Members will visit a school to see Reading Mastery in action on December 4. We will continue following up to expand and sustain this program.

You made this possible! Because of our diligent research, persistent action, and passion for our community, we are making significant change!
